I will return to face charges, says RPK

However, the blogger will only accept charges of defaming Col Azmi Zainal Abidin and no others.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Today editor, Raja Petra Kamaruddin, said he will return home to plead guilty to defaming military intelligence officer Col Azmi Zainal Abidin and not for charges of defaming Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, and military officers Col Norhayati Hassan and Col Aziz Buyong.

“I also promise I will not contest the charge. I will plead guilty and will suffer the jail sentence provided they promise to charge me for the correct ‘crime’.

“But I refuse to face the charges of defaming three people I did not defame,” Raja Petra said in his blog.

The blogger, who has been on self-imposed exile in UK for the last three years, told TV3 in an interview that he never alleged that Rosmah and the two officers were linked to the murder of Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaaribu.

“Most don’t understand that I did not make any allegation against Rosmah or the two Lt Cols. I made only an allegation against Col Azmi, the number two in the Special Branch of the military intelligence,” Raja Petra said in the TV interview.

Now that the shit has hit the fan.

Sometimes we need a storm to get people’s attention. Maybe now the police will do what I have been asking them to do these last three years: that is, investigate my statutory declaration and ascertain the truth behind what Lt Kol Azmi Zainal Abidin alleged.

The Umno websites and blogs call me a liar. They say I have signed a statutory declaration falsely accusing Rosmah Mansor and the husband and wife Lt Kols (Aziz Buyong and Norhayati Hassan) as being at the scene of the Altantuya murder the night she was murdered and blown up with C4.

The Malaysian government says the same thing and they arrested me and charged me for criminal defamation.

The mainstream media says the same thing: that I alleged Rosmah Mansor and Lt Kols Aziz Buyong and Norhayati Hassan were at the scene of the Altantuya murder the night she was murdered.

The online media also says the same thing; even sites like Malayskini, The Malaysian Insider and so on.

For three years I have written article after article explaining the statutory declaration that I signed in June 2008. I have made video recordings on the same matter, which are in Youtube, plus I spoke at ceramahs about this issue all over the place.

We’ve heard how heroes went to jail or even died for what they believe in. 

Mahatma Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, Suu Kyi to name a few heroes who stand faithfully firm and unmoved despite the consequences.  For true heroes, die they would, if their death could mark a statement of their fight.  Run, is certainly not an option. 

Never before a hero flee when called to face the music.  In fact, even an ordinary man without heroic attributes wouldn’t run away when given a chance to prove his words in the court of law should he believes that he is right.  

Claiming that the court will not be fair or that you will be put under ISA should you not flee, are mere excuses used by cowards and the guilty ones.

Raja Petra Kamarudin, founder and editor of online news blog Malaysia Today, gives this lecture entitled 'Beating Malaysian Authoritarianism with People Power: A Blog Activist's Tale' at The Australian National University on 2 March 2011 .

RPK (as he's usually known online) is Malaysia's most famous online political activist, and a forceful advocate of transparent, accountable government. His website Malaysia Today hosts many allegedly official documents detailing government corruption and scandal.

He speaks as chairman of the Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (MCLM), which is now working towards full representation in Malaysia's 13th general election.

MCLM wants to revive and re-engage Malaysians disillusioned with an UMNO-dominated federal government and return them to a government that holds fast to the spirit and intent of the Constitution.

With the next general elections looming this year, there's a palpable sense of urgency.
